Prayer Shawl Knitters

Every Thursday from 10 AM to Noon knitters ranging in skills from expert to novice to “want-to-be knitters” gather to create Prayer Shawls.  The knitting group prays for the health and well being of the future, unknown recipient.

The United Knitters Group of this church began in the winter of 2003. The inspiration for the program came from Peggy Matteson, who was our Commissioned Minister of Congregational Health at the time. Peggy told us about the work of two women graduates of the 1997 Women’s Leadership Institute at the Hartford Seminary, who started a shawl ministry in 1998. These women were Vicki Galo and Janet Bristow.

Members of the congregation freely distribute the shawls to anyone who may be in need of comfort. So far more than 1,100 have been created, prayed over, and distributed to individuals across the country, to service men and women, and to friends living abroad. Small white prayer shawls are made to wrap babies being baptized.

Our shawls are gifts for anybody in need of comfort and caring. They are knitted with love and prayer, intended to wrap our loved ones in the warmth of God’s amazing grace and love. You are welcome to visit the shawl cart on Sundays in Farnum Hall.

The Knitters Group meets on Thursday mornings at 10 AM, and share our love, laughter, and prayer for this ministry. We’d love to have you join us!

Participants: Any one interested in knitting

Meet: Thursdays 10 AM – Noon every week
